Football Production – Industry Enhancements at SVG’s Summit

by Jim Irving

On the 18th March, Sports Video Group held their annual Football Summit. This year the event moved from its usual home at the Stade De France in Paris to Production House MediaPro’s facility in the centre of Barcelona.

A total of 165 sports media professionals made the trip to north east Spain, with speakers ranging from FIFA, UEFA and the Premier League to leading european broadcasters and manufacturers.

Next generation services

The afternoon of football themed discussion kicked off with a presentation from Bernie Ross, Head of TV Operations at UEFA. Bernie presented UEFA’s vision of how they plan to significantly increase the amount of broadcast and digital content made available to their Broadcast Partners.

The “Next Generation Services” project will provide broadcasters with access to additional camera angles, an enhanced data offering and sophisticated graphics. The service will be launched in time for the start of the new UEFA Champions Leagues rights cycle later this year.

Content can be used across web, mobile and as part of a broadcast workflow. deltatre will be the main systems integrator on the project, working with partners to create a scalable workflow to meet the needs of the project.

Cost production

I represented deltatre on a panel discussing low cost production, a topic that covers a wide range of technologies and workflows. Key themes from the discussion were opportunities for broadcasters and media aggregators to use emerging technologies to broaden the coverage of lower league sport and also potentially to cover a wider portfolio of sport.

I made the point that data needs be a key ingredient in growing a new TV or digital sport. At deltatre our analytics tell us that people who engage with data from a sport on a digital platform during the day will consume more of that sport’s content on traditional TV, so metadata will only become increasingly important for the consumption of sport across all digital platforms as the adoption of devices grows and grows

Graphics enhancing studio programming

deltatre was also mentioned on a panel discussing the use of graphics for enhancing studio programming. Nick Moody, IMG’s Head of Premier League Productions used a stunning showreel to highlight how deltatre’s Magma system populates a variety of Augmented Reality templates with different sets of match data, everything from league positions of the twenty Premier League teams through to touch maps highlighting how often a player has come into contact with the ball over the ninety minutes.

The use of Augmented Reality graphics to signpost key editorial points has significantly enhanced the Premier Leagues programme offering to their international broadcasters.

4K, IP connectivity and more

The afternoon of discussion in Barcelona raised a number of other topics, everything from the better use of sound to bring fans closer to the action, the growth of 4K production and how sports broadcasters can use IP connectivity and the cloud to drive economies in their production workflows.

At times it felt that the afternoon was a little too crammed with too wide a variety of topics and too many panelists, but overall a worthwhile afternoon and a good opportunity to network with key industry contacts.
