Digital law was a bit like the Wild West when I first started because in many countries, the written laws related to tech fields were very limited.

Head of Legal at Deltatre. After graduating with a law degree from the University of Turin, Elena honed her craft by working in a small law firm – a decision that enabled her to experience a wide variety of topics within her chosen field. “I fell in love with contract law, contract negotiation, and commercial law – in particular, international trade law,” she says.

Hungry to learn everything she possibly could, she qualified with an LLM in International Trade Law at the International Training Centre of the ILO before moving to Brussels to work for an NGO dealing with rights and freedoms in the digital environment. It was a topic that Elena would learn left much of the rulebook unwritten.

“Digital law was a bit like the Wild West when I first started because in many countries, the written laws related to tech fields were very limited,” she says. If laws were in place, they’d often relate to several years before – something that would no longer remain relevant in the continually evolving digital world.

“Technology becomes obsolete after one year, even after a few months sometimes,” she says. “What tech lawyers must do is to use the general principles of the law in interpreting statutes and regulations in order to follow and, in some cases, anticipate this continually evolving environment.”

Amidst this atmosphere of change, an open position at Deltatre combined two of her passions; contract law and digital law, and she joined the company in 2013.

Today, as head of the department, Elena and her team support the far-reaching legal requirements of a global business. Daily tasks can include drafting contracts and relevant documentation for sales and procurement teams and supporting them during the negotiations, advising business functions, as well as handling data protection, compliance and corporate topics. “Every day is different,” she says.

Despite the vast amount of change she has witnessed over the years, the aspect of law that Elena truly values is that logic remains at the core of every decision. “What I like is the rationale,” she says. “Lawyers can sometimes be perceived as people who follow a lot of red-tape but what is really behind us is logical thinking which drives our ability to support the business.”
