Deltatre in three words: Professional, human, imaginative

Please tell us about yourself!

I was born and raised in Rostock on the beautiful Baltic Sea. I studied media informatics (a combination of computer & media science) in Hamburg, and I've always had a passion for football. Even when you combine these elements together, the fact that I was then hired by a sports data company in 2009, after I worked in the 3D animation industry, was a coincidence.

What does a ‘typical’ working day in your life look like?

For me, a typical working day almost always begins with joy. I like the subject of sport and creating products from sports and soccer data.

Usually, the day starts with a meeting with my team. After that, I like to map out a structure for my day and then solve the programming and design puzzles that emerge from my projects. There are also days where I mainly need to focus on meetings and calls.

Can you tell us about a stand-out project or moment?

One of my most memorable projects in the past was "Databased Publishing". It was a very good feeling to see the first fully automated Infopack (PDF) for commentators on football matches being created in seconds.

I was also part of a small team that produced a special edition magazine for the Bundesliga season. As a child, I read these magazines enthusiastically and later as a grownup I have produced them myself. Fantastic!

Do you have any hobbies? Do they influence your professional life?

Obviously, I love football. I played it myself and I’m still a big fan of my home team, F.C. Hansa Rostock. My passion for the sport helps me a lot in my job.

Travel is something I’m also very enthusiastic about. In 2014/2015 I took a sabbatical for a trip around the world. The adventures and experiences of such a trip are priceless and have helped me to find peace and distance in stressful situations.

How did you come across the company? What was it about the job and the company that made you want to apply?

A friend from University (who was already working for Deltatre) was with his boss in town for business appointments, so it really was a coincidence. In the evening, I met them in a bar to watch a Champions League game. I must have made an impression with my football fun facts, because when his boss then heard that I was a graphics programmer, he offered me a job!

What is your favorite part of your role?

I like the freedom that I have to develop my skills and my personality. I was given responsibility for products, as well as fellow employees, very quickly, so for me there was no real “trainee phase”. I found that this was a good thing, as it helped me gain self-confidence and showed me that I am capable of implementing what I had previously thought was difficult.

An ongoing goal of mine is to help colleagues where possible and make their work easier, so I also enjoy optimizing work processes with the help of digitization.

Are you involved in any social aspects of the company or training programmes? If so, what? How do they influence your professional life?

I recommended three of my friends because I felt they had the right skills and could be a good fit at Deltatre. They were subsequently hired, and this definitely had a positive impact on my social life within the company.

I also follow our social initiatives for diversity, inclusion, equality between women and men and the projects for climate and environmental protection with enthusiasm. I support the commitment of Deltatre to all of these topics.

What are your biggest learnings since you joined the company?

Maybe the biggest lesson is that there is nothing I can’t achieve. With the help of my colleagues, tutorials & further education and technology, every good idea or plan is actionable.

I also learned that I like the people in the sports industry a lot. This, of course, includes my colleagues, but also includes my customers. The cooperation is very exciting and certainly different from other industries.

What is it about the company that you believe sets it apart from competitors / other players working in a similar field?

For me the differences are the quality of the work and the results. The professionalism of the organization and the wealth of desire and creativity to implement the tasks and achieve our goals.

Why should new recruits want to work with us?

People who want to work in an exciting and pulsating sports and IT environment, and people who welcome responsibility and learning new things every day, who want to ask themselves at the beginning of each day, "What can I expect today?", should come to Deltatre.

What is it about the future that excites you?

In the past, I've automatically turned data into visual products. To follow that red line, I have trained myself in the field of data science with the help of tutorials and courses so that I can now create new insights and products from data, with the help of algorithms and ML models. I think this is an exciting field for our company, and also for the entire industry.
