Today, on 21 April 2021, we observe World Creativity and Innovation Day. Designated by the United Nations, this day intends to increase awareness of the role of creativity and innovation in all aspects of human development.

On World Creativity and Innovation Day, the UN invites the world to “embrace the idea that innovation is essential for harnessing the economic potential of nations,” as described on their website. “Innovation, creativity and mass entrepreneurship can provide new momentum for economic growth and job creation. It can expand opportunities for everyone,” their website states.

Not only does this day celebrate two of the core driving forces of our company, but it reminds us all to stay inspired and open-minded to the fantastic talent that surrounds us both within our teams, within our peer industries, and our communities.

Fortunately, our worldwide Deltatre community enables us to draw on the ideas of individuals with different backgrounds, journeys, visions and opinions, in various locations across the globe. The resulting wide range of passions and personal interests help us to solve problems and progress within our field. Modern businesses must endeavour to make room for innovative and creative thinking as often as possible, and through the celebration of this day, we unite as a team to recognise just how vital these components have been, and continue to be, to us.

Do not allow your mind to be imprisoned by majority thinking. Remember that the limits of science are not the limits of imagination.

All sorts of things can happen when you’re open to new ideas and playing around with things

Alberto Scotta – Creative Director, Deltatre

“Creativity is what makes my working day less ordinary… Creativity gives a splash of color to each activity and provides enthusiasm, joy and engagement. I’ve been working at Deltatre for 20 years and I have lived through many fantastic moments of creativity.

There was an unforgettable occasion when we studied how to recreate the same emotion, the same expectation and the same feeling of live football for an individual visiting the FIFA World Football Museum online. We put all of our ideas on the table during an exhilarating brainstorming session, and when we emerged, we delivered a presentation that made the eyes of those presenting sparkle. Our personal, human touch was to finish the presentation by giving our client an old-school style sticker album where they could choose their top 11 players of all time and keep it forever.

Alberto’s example demonstrates how important it is to connect creatively with our work on a human level, to provide a more enhanced experience when discussing such a broad topic as technology. Morgana Lalli, Data Analyst at Deltatre, reflects on this factor in relation to innovation – reminding us that it is a trial-and-error process. We are only human, and this is how we continue to learn and stay nimble...

Morgana Lalli – Data Analyst, Deltatre

“For me, innovation has three facets that are just as important as each other…

Innovation is a trial-and-error process.

By innovating/developing a process, you will often experience many dead ends, however, these can lead to an increase in knowledge on the process in question, so it is never a failure. Regarding this very aspect, I quote the words of Thomas Edison about the invention of the bulb - "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

Innovation is not just about big and complicated processes.

Innovation is about everything that improves life/quality of work - even things that may seem small at first. Occasionally, at the Innovation Lab (Deltatre's Turin-based Lab committed to exploring, investigating and uncovering new technologies), we have helped people solve their problems by acting as a bridge and connecting them with other individuals who are working through, or have already worked through, a similar issue.

Innovation is better when developed as a team.

The concept of innovation arises from problems which require new solutions. Listening and collecting multiple points of view as well as different needs and different ideas enriches the process and benefits everybody involved.”

Teamwork is truly at the core of Deltatre and is a common theme that has been identified by our ambassadors. To maintain our common vision of being the world's most influential provider of fan experience technology for the sport and media industries, listening to and relying on one another must remain central to our practices.

Annabelle McGee – Principal Experience Designer, Deltatre

“Creatives really thrive and bring value when we are part of a team, collaboratively solving any challenge (business or design related) and are able to use our toolkit to bring to life these challenges. The main theme today for me is around the value that designers and innovators have when solving more than just ‘design challenges’ and using this opportunity to highlight that.

When we talk about creatives capabilities and deliverables, or the assets that we create within our processes, for example, ‘prototypes’ or ‘design artefacts’, many people might interpret that in a literal sense to solely meaning ‘creating wireframes’ or ‘a click through interactive version of UX or UI’. Today is a great occasion to highlight that our skills in turning challenges into tangible opportunities are much broader than that.

Whilst numbers aren't always a designer's best friend, we use them frequently in our creative process to test viability, desirability, and feasibility of ideas and concepts. Undertaking qualitative and quantitative research with both the business and customers ensures we understand the problem at a deeper level, creating actionable and reliable insights which drive our design decisions.”

At Deltatre, educating our community on the role of creativity and innovation in human development is very important, as well as listening to what our community believes this role is currently, and how it could be improved.

The creative journey is far more fruitful by having diversity of thought, when all viewpoints are contributing to one common goal or problem, and it’s critical that every team member has a voice and the opportunity to be heard, in order to contribute in a meaningful way. This is the basis of an inclusive environment, and this is something that we endeavor to foster at Deltatre.
